Sorry for being late to the party and not getting a post up about this earlier, but I’m home sick from work with some kind of sinus cold and definitely not feeling 100% today.
As expected, we had a big announcement from Mythic this morning. Slightly unexpected was that it wasn’t just one big announcement (although they all fall under a single “Call to Arms” Live Expansion banner), but a boatload of smaller annoucements that look like a 6-month roadmap direct from Mythic’s development team.
A brief overview of what’s coming up looks like this:
- February 6 – 15: Night of Murder Live Event
- February 24 – March ?: Call to Arms: Bitter Rivals Live Event, including the new Twisted Tower scenario
- March: Two new careers join WAR: the Orc Choppa and the Dwarf Slayer
- April: Call to Arms: Beyond the Sands Live Event (no info yet)
- May: Call to Arms: Rise of the Tomb Kings Live Event (no info yet)
- June: New RvR-controlled zone/dungeon opens: Land of the Dead (no info yet)
While much of this was expected, and should definitely keep us all busy in WAR for the next couple of months, the new latter pair of live events and the RvR-controlled dungeon are especially intriguing to me. It looks as though Mark Jacobs and his team at Mythic have really taken the community’s feedback to heart (Keen has been asking for a WAR version of Darkness Falls for months), which is, to my mind, pretty awesome.
Bloggers are already referring to the Land of the Dead zone as Darkness Falls 2.0, with Keen expressing his worries that it may be entirely away from the Tier 4 open RvR zones and gear-driven. This would definitely be a concern, as I don’t think anyone wants to see a drop-off in the amount of oRvR, just a change to the way it’s occurring right now (musical keeps et al.)
Looks as though we have a lot to digest here. Without any further information about the back half of these events and the new RvR zone/dungeon, it’s hard to analyze the annoucement any further. But from what we’ve seen so far, it looks as though Q1 & Q2 are going to be busy months at Mythic, which leads me to think that Mythic’s head-count reduction last month hasn’t really affected their day-to-day all that much (yet — we’ll see when things hit the QA/testing stage, I guess.)
It’s hard not to be excited about what’s coming around the corner, though. I’m particularly happy to see the Land of the Dead announcement… I just wish there was more to it than a line-item in the newsletter! <froths at the mouth>
Edit 01/29 2:25pm: Something I missed from the WAR Newsletter was that there’s also a new podcast up from Paul Barnett where he goes into a little more detail about the Choppa and Slayer. Worth watching!
